A corporate tax for the people – Eugene Weekly

The wealth gap in society continues to widen. Big business continues to grow, leaving the little one behind. The middle class that once included the majority of Americans continues to shrink. According to the Pew Research Center, the downsizing of middle-income households has been constant since the 1970s.

The cost of living also seems to exceed the chances of getting a living wage. So what can we, people, do to get money out of our pockets? Sign the OPR initiative petition for the 2022 election. The Oregon People’s Rebate (OPR) is a state voting initiative petition that would give every Oregonian, including children in households, $ 750 per year . That’s $ 3,000 a year for a four-person household.

How it works? Big companies like Comcast generate millions in profits in Oregon and often pay less than 1% in taxes. The Oregon People’s Rebate would raise the corporate minimum tax after Oregon’s $ 25 million in revenue to 3%. It is that simple.

How would this help Oregon? The UBI Center estimates that the popular Oregon rebate will reduce overall poverty in Oregon by about 15 percent and child poverty by about 26 percent.
