In particular, ERG companies – EAC, Kazchrome, SSGPO – install automation systems to regulate fuel supply and monitoring systems, stabilization systems for optimal operation of electric furnaces, optimization systems for lighting; large-scale thermal insulation works are carried out regularly.

All in all, these solutions significantly reduce the consumption of energy from traditional sources and further reduce the carbon footprint of companies.

Energy from renewable sources will replace traditional energy

The plans closest to the Group are to increase the number of measures linked to the implementation of the energy efficiency program and to accelerate the pace of development of projects for the production of electricity from renewable sources.

ERG develops energy production projects based on ferroallied gas. It is generated as a by-product of ferroalloy production at the Aksuskiy and Aktyubinskiy ferroalloy plants. Thus, such an unusual approach allows the Group to make a significant contribution to reducing emissions.

Analysis center and monitoring will accelerate decarbonization

ERG’s analysis center will make it possible to accelerate decarbonization not only in the companies of the Group. This experience can be adapted to industries that require environmental transformation.

To paint a general picture of carbon footprint formation and the role it plays in the production chain, entirely new monitoring solutions need to be applied.

In 2020, the World Economic Forum announced the launch of a program to monitor emissions and carbon footprints across the supply chain of mining and foundry companies. Mining and Metals Blockchain Initiative (MMBI) was born from the collaboration between the WEF and the biggest players in the market including ERG.

To solve the issue of monitoring emissions, it was decided to use blockchain technology. To accurately measure the carbon footprint of products from manufacturer to delivery to end-user, all data must be collected in a single system and cryptographic tools must be used to collect and analyze the information.

“Such solutions encounter certain difficulties,” explains Mashkevich. “Technically, it is not difficult to develop the system. It is difficult to bring it to uniform standards by which such monitoring will be carried out. After all, there are still no strict standards in the industry. on emissions monitoring. By applying different standards, we are just delaying the process of decarbonization. Therefore, I always talk about the need to negotiate and come to a common understanding, “concludes Mashkevich.

Waste management is like an independent industry

Industry is traditionally seen as the main polluter. But it should be mentioned that according to the most pessimistic estimates, the global emission level in the mining and smelting industry does not exceed 7%. And these shows aren’t the biggest problem.

The waste management process also requires attention. In this regard, ERG has a whole strategic orientation, which includes the improvement of the well-being of the local community in the regions of its presence, and the respect of international standards for the quality of water, air and of soils, as well as the disposal of any products left over after developing the deposits.

Waste management is dealt with through the concept of useful application. For example, it is possible to produce cement from slag rubble, in particular ferrochromic slag; dust and ash are applicable to the production of building materials, ash polymer building materials, coal foam, fertilizer from weathered coal.

“We always try to find opportunities in all difficult areas. And we’re doing pretty well given the scalability and level of environmental friendliness of our production facilities, ”adds Mashkevich.
